The 214 Kangxi radicals
A radical is the part a dictionary files a character under. There are 214 of them, fixed since the Kangxi dictionary of 1716, and they are still how paper dictionaries and most indexes are organised. A radical is not the same thing as a component: a component is a building block of the shape, and a character usually has several.
