Origin
The traditional form 諷 is analysed in the Shuowen Jiezi as "from 言 (speech), with 風 giving the sound". Its early sense was reciting aloud, and from there speaking in a roundabout way to criticise. In the simplified 讽, 言 is written as the radical 讠 and the sound part is written 风.
